IT'S A LAUDABLE AIM.

So Owen Glen is going to fund an inquiry into the appalling degree of child abuse in New Zealand with $80 million of his own money.

He is gathering a list of notables to assist with the mission.

My question is, will the inquiry allow its quest to include the pernicious degradation of the human spirit and the financial advantages that our current welfare system delivers to many of the perpetrators of child abuse in NZ.

I await with interest but not with great expectation.

Just good money after bad.
What a waste.
He could actually donate it to the Sallies, who do more than anyone to avert poverty.
More reports and more reports. Boring.

I'll be interested to see what they come up with when they ask the question - "How do we change a culture that purports to love and treasure their children, but seems to think it's ok to discipline with physical and and verbal abuse."
I saw this happening 50 years ago, so it is nothing new.
Of course we all want our children to be well-mannered, self disciplined, achieving adults. It's how we go about achieving it that defines the civility or savagery of the culture. Parent's attitude to children will have to be massively changed - and throwing more free money at them will not make one iota of difference. Without the will of the "parents" to change, I can't see it happening.

Tell Owen Glenn that if Helen would not give him a knighthood neither will Key.
But thanks for his spirit and money.

Maybe, just maybe he'll produce a non political report which sheets the blame home to (a) Maori (b) single mothers and (c) welfare dependency.

I'm sure I heard recently a specialist say that figures had not change much in the last twelve years.
During that time Kiwis have been bombarded with claims of talkfeasts, Departmental changes and new projects that were going to change those stats.
Now the evidence is that all that breast beating was for nought.
